Social Movements throughout history and around the world have used assemblies to make decisions. Movements, particularly in the Global South - Africa, Asia, and Latin America - have used assemblies to instigate people-powered change. In the 21st century, the Southern Movement is building power through radical democratic, participatory spaces that respect and trust the collective voice of people in struggle. This month join us to assess what tools we can learn from Global movements who are practicing peoples governance. What impacts have they made and how can the assembly process advance the Southern Freedom Movement forward in this moment? What organizing opportunities set us in motion toward Southern Movement Assembly Regional Convergence 11 happening in September and what power will be built?

SMA State of The South Calls advance the Southern Freedom Movement in the 21st Century. Rooted in the historic legacies of the South, organizers, participants of assemblies, formations, and groups come together on monthly calls to share what we are learning about the political moment. We work on tactics, shared strategies, and leadership development. We build transformative relationships through the centering of collective healing and joy, and we practice governance in real time through the carrying out of the SMA Multi Year Action Plan!
